What is a fuse board (consumer unit) upgrade?

Your fuse board — also called a consumer unit — is where the electricity entering your property is split into circuits and protected. Older boards often use rewireable fuses and have no residual current device (RCD), so a fault can go unnoticed and there's far less protection against electric shock.

A fuse box upgrade replaces that unit with a modern consumer unit fitted with RCD or RCBO protection, so individual circuits trip safely when something goes wrong. The work is carried out to the current wiring regulations, BS 7671, and certified on completion. As a NAPIT-registered company we also notify building control where the work is notifiable.

Signs you need a fuse box replacement

You don't have to wait for something to fail. These are the common signs that a board is due for replacement:

An older board with rewireable or cartridge fuses rather than circuit breakers.
No RCD protection — no test button on the unit.
A wooden back-box or cast-iron switchgear, which dates the installation.
Breakers that trip repeatedly, or fuses that keep blowing.
Scorch marks, buzzing or a burning smell at or near the board — switch off and call us straight away.
A fuse board replacement is needed because there are no spare ways for new circuits, such as an EV charger, hot tub, extension or garden supply.
An EICR report that flags the board with a C1 or C2 code.
